A reflection on Mark 4:35-41(NRSVCE)
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Reflection:
Faith Amidst the Storm: The disciples' fear during the storm highlights their struggle with faith. Despite witnessing Jesus' miracles, they still doubt His power and care. This mirrors our own lives, where we often face "storms" and challenges. In these moments, it's easy to question God's presence and care for us. However, this passage reminds us to trust in His sovereignty and love, even when circumstances seem dire.
Jesus' Peace: While the disciples panic, Jesus sleeps peacefully, demonstrating His absolute trust in God's control. His calmness amidst chaos teaches us the importance of resting in God's peace, knowing that He is always in control, no matter how turbulent our situation may be.
Authority of Jesus: By calming the storm, Jesus reveals His divine authority over nature, reinforcing the truth that He is not just a teacher but the Son of God. This miracle strengthens the disciples' understanding of who Jesus truly is. It reminds us that Jesus has the power to bring peace and calm to the storms in our lives, both literal and metaphorical.
Invitation to Deeper Faith: Jesus' question, "Do you still have no faith?" challenges the disciples to deepen their trust in Him. It's a call for us too, to reflect on our own faith journey and to grow in our trust and reliance on Jesus, especially during life's storms.
Wonder and Awe: The disciples' awe at Jesus' command over the wind and waves invites us to marvel at His power and divinity. It encourages us to cultivate a sense of wonder and reverence for Jesus, recognizing Him as the Lord of all creation.
In reflecting on this passage, we are reminded of the importance of faith, the peace that comes from trusting in Jesus, His divine authority, and the awe and reverence we should have for Him. It calls us to deepen our faith and trust in Jesus, knowing that He is always with us, even in the midst of life's storms.
